i have the 1.42 mac mini with 512mb ram, would it be more beneficial to upgrade to 1gb of ram or to a 5400rpm hd or upgrade to both?

Both, if you have the budget.

Otherwise, max out the RAM first.

You will have to replace the hard drive eventually, as it would be the first major component to wear out.

A 16MB Cache Toshiba HDD is a great choice for a 5400RPM hard drive.

I'd say update the RAM first, and if you were serious about getting good speed out of a hard disk look at a 7200RPM Firewire hard disk, or buy a 7200RPM internal IDE PC hard disk and buy a Firewire case for it.
