Mac Word 2008 Locks Up System

Hello to all,

I've been doing some extensive editing of a .docx file and am finding that if I don't close Word and then re-open it after about 20 minutes, it hangs up my entire system and I have to force a hard reboot.

To give some background information, I was at my local Apple Store earlier in the week having a fan issue looked at. As part of that they said they wanted to re-install the OS, but that this would in no way touch my files and apps. I said ok, as long as that was definitely the case and I was assured it was.

When I got my laptop home I found that instead of having version 10.6.6 (which is what I had when I went to the store) I have 10.6.3, so I upgraded.

I then found that when I tried to open an older app, it wouldn't because Rosetta wasn't installed (so I installed it).

Is it possible that something that was done at the Apple Store has caused this problem?

The text I'm editing it about 15 pages long (OCR'd from a PDF) and because the original file had lots of pictures in it, I've had to do a lot of deleting line breaks and hyphens (which I then do a cmd+s to save changes each time as I go).

I also notice that just before the system locks up, my free hard drive space has gone from 186.89GB to around 184.50GB.

Does this seem right? I don't recall ever having this sort of problem with Word before, but then I've not had to do this much repetitive editing from an OCR'd doc before.

Thanks

Is your Office 2008 up-to-date also? Open Word, then go to the Word menu/About Word. You should see that Word latest installed update is 12.2.8. If not, run Check for Updates from the Help menu (again in Word), and let Office 2008 update itself. This _is_ Microsoft, so if you get any error about 'can't locate valid Office to update', or a similar error, then uninstall and reinstall Office 2008 from your original Office disk. This process will not affect your documents (unless you mistakenly have stored your own documents in the Office 2008 folder - not recommended :D )

DeltaMac,

Am running that update now, but can you tell me where it stores a downloaded update before it installs it?

I ran this a few minutes ago, but accidentally clicked on close while trying to close another window. I'm running it again now, but I've got a feeling it will have downloaded it twice and I don't want an uninstalled update hanging around if I can help it.

Thanks

I don't know where MS downloads the updates. Could be that an incomplete download is not saved anywhere, but I don't have any proof of that.
I prefer working with MS updates the same way that I do updates with Apple, downloading the updates direct from MS downloads, rather than doing the auto-updates. Then, you have more control where the download location, and what you can do with it. Notice that I'm not saying anything about being patient with large downloads for primary apps :D
