MacBook Pro start-up issues

So my MacBook pro is about two years old. It has a large amount of photo files but besides that, not much else takes up space. Today my system updates alerted me of a few updates available including iTunes. After the updates were installed it said to restart, so I did. When my computer came on it stayed on the gray Apple logo screen for about five minutes, went to the blue blank screen and never changed. I forced a reboot and the same things happened except now it gets to the desktop.

The desktop is blank, i.e. No dock, no tool bar and no icons. I've tried doing some shortcut commands to see if I can get into the hard drive folder, but it won't respond to anything.

Also, after about 15 minutes of letting it sit, an alert popped up to tell me the spotlight application had unexpectedly quit, but each button in the window was blank. I clicked the blue one...

I can see and use the mouse, but that's it.

Thanks for the help!!

UPDATE: the rainbow spinning beach ball appears for 10ish seconds every once in a while, but it goes back to the mouse and nothing seems to have changed.
