Macbook turning off at bootup

Hi,

A couple of weeks ago my Macbook suddenly refused to turn on, with no apparent reason. When I connected the AC plug the green light was on, but the battery was almost empty (as far as I could tell from the counter on the back). I tried with a different plug and same result. I naturally (but probably wrongly) assumed it was a battery problem and ordered a new one.

While I was waiting for it to arrive, I tried once in a while to boot up the computer. Sometimes the light in the AC plug turned orange for a very short while, the system started to boot and then suddenly the light turned green and the system shutted off (right after the chime with the apple logo on the screen). Other times, the light was green all the time and the system wouldn't even start up.

Two days ago, I tried again and this time the light styed orange and the computer booted up without any problems whatsoever. I worked with it all day, making back up copies of my disk and all the rest. I thought I had solved the problem (or rather it had miracleously solved itself!) but then this morning I found myself in the same situation.

When plugged, the AC light turns shortly green then orange then stays green. At first the computer boots for a moment and then shuts off. After a couple of failed boot ups it doesn't turn on at all. Now I have the new battery and I have tried to change it but the results are the same, so I assume it's not a battery problem (the battery is now full, also).

Sorry for the length of the explanation, but I would be thankful if anyone could tell me a way to solve this problem. I am not too stressed, since all my files are backed up, but I would like to recover my computer, which otherwise was working perfectly fine.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried resetting the SMC, but there is no change. The problem persists.

I don't want to doubt, I just want to make sure the correct procedure was followed because the correct procedure is actually kind of buried on that page.

The correct procedure would be to remove the battery and power plug from the computer, wait a few moments, press the power button on the computer and hold it down for 5 seconds, release the button, replace the battery, then apply power to the computer.

It's easy to miss on that page -- just wanted to ensure you're doing the correct thing.

A few days after my last post, and after several attempts to boot up without any response, my mac decided, like Lazarus, to stand up and walk again. I am not sure if it was the SMC procedure recommended by by el diablo (sic!) or some other unfathomable reason. In any case, thanks a lot for your help. The mac is up and running now - let's hope it lasts a bit longer than jesuschrist!

Just do not kiss it in a garden.

What? Too soon? :)
