I used a third party programme called Mackeeper UGHHH SOOO Stupid i know,it moved loads of files to the trash now i do not know where they originally came from or belong!! the put back option is in grey??and will not work even when i highlight one by one!!
how can i manually put these files back where they belong?
i know i should have used time machine but i have not set it up and its too late for that now
i have been researching and racking my brain on how to put these folders and contents of them back to where they once were all of the contents of the folder are still in tact AND i have not emptied my trash,my programmes and some of my apps are not working properly now...i use my computer alot for making music and things are jumbled up now...
is there anyone out there who knows the answer to my prayers on how to go about putting these folders/files back to where they came from to restore functionality to my mac..Yes and thank u if u were going to tell me i HAVE un installed mackeeper...A very sad and upset Mac user!! Cheers Shane
iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), Put back option will not work

I wonder if Mackeeper has an "Undo" command in its edit menu?
Probably too late for that to work now, as any chance of that is likely gone when you uninstalled MacKeeper.
I don't think the "put back" command is available when the Finder is not used for the file operation.

When you don't have any backup - then likely your choice is to wade through each folder, finding your own documents, music, videos, etc. and recreate the folders where those files belong (usually just a good guess, or you could find someone to personally help you who has a good grasp about where those various files should go.) I bet a lot of those files can be discarded, as they may just be settings (plist) files, and cache folders, etc.
I suspect that you selected some kind of "cleaning" operation, with all options, rather than just a default setting.
The apps that don's seem to work can just be reinstalled.
You will likely need to reinstall OS X, too - which is a fairly simple task, just restart to your recovery partition (holding Command-R), and choose to reinstall OS X. THAT's simple. The task of reassembling your files, etc, probably won't be neat.
Might make you feel good to contact the smut-peddler that sold you that MacKeeper. Maybe THEY can help you (although I doubt it)
(Maybe you should ask for your money back :D )

No-o-o-o-o-o-o, you did actually install MacKeeper?! Uninstall that crap and never install anything like that again. For those of you thinking about installing MacKeeper, let this be a lesson to you.

Thank u so much for ur time and your reply with helpful insight and not just blasting me for installing mackeeper...they shouldn't have that programme pop up everywhere its not fair..i thought i was doing the right thing:( obviously not!! i contacted mackeeper people as they r online 24/7 and they said i shouldnt blame mackeeper for my problems the cheeky B**stads!!! they were not helpful at all and gave me even more misinformation like uninstall and re-install mackeeper and so on....they had no grasp on what a mac actually does or how to trace where my files came from..which is what i did..i went to console and it said stuff like this, this is just a little of it:

SO i recon it moved parts of my library folders to the trash? thats what i gathered from it anyways...basically do u think that it moved parts of these folders and made sub folders with the same name as the folder it came from in my library,in the trash?? some of it does seem to be p list stuff so not too worried bout that...i tried moving my google files back to their folder in the library but it didnt restore my google chrome bookmarks etc that was my little test to see if it will work dragging contents back to library...i opened my keychain folder in my trash and dragged the contents of it back to the keychains folder in my library as a start too, i wonder if it will begin to work again like before?
AGAIN thank u for sending me advice i really do appreciate ANY bits of info i can use to restore my mac! Cheers Shane

It for some reason moved those folders to trash; the beautiful (or ugly) thing is that when those app support folders are missing and an app is launched, a new folder and its contents will be generated to replace the missing ones in the original location. So when you opened an app that missed those, new stuff was generated on its place. And that was probably how it also messed your Chrome.

I could see why an utility or cleaning app might want to move the app support folders for apps no longer present or otherwise invasive apps, but the ones on the list should have been left in place. Bad, bad design. I hope you did have a backup of your bookmarks and logins and whatnot for Chrome, and all the similar data for anything that Mackeeper killed for you.
