MACOSX Account Info & Tiger Question

Making Design taste good
Two part question:

I have a new ibook with an admin. password I don't know.
Is there anything I can do? Is there a way to reset it without
knowing the password?

Also can you install Tiger on an ibook without a DVD-rom?

Boot from the Mac OS X Install CD/DVD and select "Reset Password" from the "Utilities" menu when you're asked to select an installation volume.

Also can you install Tiger on an ibook without a DVD-rom?
You can install using another Mac with a DVD drive if you put your iBook in FireWire Target Disk mode.

Optionally, you can exchange your retail DVD set for a set of Tiger CDs through Apple for $30.

Password reset: you can start up from your OS X installation CD - in one of the menus (sorry, can't recall now which one) you can choose "reset password" which lets you reset the password.

Installing Tiger: as far as I know, you can get it from Apple on CDs rather than a DVD; the other option that should theoretically work is to hook up your iBook to another Apple Mac that has a DVD drive, start the iBook into target mode, and install Tiger from the other machine.

Hope this helps.

right, but I need my password to start the installation of Tiger.
I put the Tiger installation dvd in, and the first thing that it ask for is my admin. username and password. So how can I start installation to get to the reset option if I can't get to it without a password?

ElDiabloConCaca: weird - when I clicked on this thread this morning, your post had not appeared yet... But yeah: at least we do agree... ;-)

macjones: you should not be asked for your password just to install the OS. You most likely have the Firmware password enabled. Which I am not 100 % sure how to reset without actually knowing the password. (I think taking out RAM modules and/or the backup battery on the logic board might help.)

I sugget searching on Yahoo, Google, etc. to check whether and how it can be reset.

To check whether the Firmware password is active, try starting into Safe Mode (press the Apple and the S key right after you've heard the startup chime, and keep them pressed until you are taken to a UNIX screen; if you are NOT taken to the UNIX screen, then the Firmware password is active. If you do get to the UNIX screen, the Firmware password is not active. You can type exit into the command line and hit return to leave the UNIX window).

To reset an open-firmware password, you must open the machine and either add more RAM or remove some RAM. Once you do this, you should reset PRAM and NVRAM and the open firmware password should be gone (or at least bypassable for that session).

How do I load from the disc? I am putting the disc in, and it is coming up in OSX presenting me with the problem I mentioned before.

Hold down the 'c' key on the keyboard immediately after starting up or restarting the computer, and keep it held down until the computer shows the grey Apple logo.

To startup from the CD: power on your computer, and *immediately* after you have heard the startup chime, insert the CD into your drive and press the C key on your keyboard (hold it down until you can see OS X actually starting) - OS X will then load from the CD-ROM.

Hope this helps.

oops - sorry: i didn't see there was a 2nd page...

did u try using the laptop as an external harddrive (target mode)?

yeah but it wont let me w/o a password
and the comp. wont restart and go into the disc
I press c from the "gong" on and it doesn't do anything.

The problem is the guy I bought the computer from
said he set the password to be nothing (literally nothing)
and now I know the admin's Name but have no clue of the password
or phrase and the guy I bought it from doesn't know what to do
because he thought it was blank... is there any like "mac1234's or
0123456's that Mac uses as a default password?
