Hello Everyone, I need some help with my PowerMac G5. I have a DP 1.8ghz with all the standard features. My PowerMac used to run fine but lately it seems since Tiger has been around and the updates for it my system has become very unstable. It keeps giving me the screen saying your computer needs to restart and to hold down the power button or it gives me a kernel panic which goes along the lines of this -

I keep getting these errors, I have just reinstalled a fresh copy of MacOSX Tiger trying to resolve this issue but I think once I got the updates it started occuring again. I have tried unplugging my devices, updating drivers and changing my internet settings around but nothing seems to work. I get them randomly, sometimes the Mac is fine for hours but sometimes in the space of 10 minutes I get 3-4 crashes, it seems like it happens more often when I am surfing. I think it has never happened when I am video editing and using my work programs like Final Cut Pro 5, Motion 2, LiveType etc... I have tried Firefox, Internet explorer and they all give me the same results, seems like if I go to certain webpages it crashes without a doubt and I know which ones they are. Can someone please help me... ?

Do yourself a favour, set up a new user account on it and use that for a while. See if it still keeps bombing out on you. If it doesn't, then there is something very wrong in your ~/library folder. Unless there is a pattern as to what you are doing, try removing the entire preferences folder from it (don't trash it, just take it out and see if things stabilise). If, after resetting the prefs, you have a problem with any particular app, find its pref file and put it back in the newly created Preferences folder that will appear in your library folder.

Kernel panics can be a result of software problems, but more often they are caused by hardware. The most common "suspect" in hardware created kernel panics is RAM. Memtest, or if you don't want to fool with booting into single user mode Rember are currently about the best memory tests available. Whichever one you choose, run it for several hours, some recommend a minimum of eight hours, to be sure you have a thorough test.

USB devices, even hubs, have been known to cause kernel panics too. So if you have anything connected to the USB or firewire ports try disconnecting and see if the kernel panics go away.

Thanx for the help so far, I have already tried creating another user account but that doesn't really help with the kernel panics. What I have noticed I only get the kernel panics when I am online and browsing the internet, I have tried many different browsers with no success. I have also noticed I can get it to kernel panic on www.ebay.com.au and if I type AMD in the search at the top of the page it will kernel panic 9/10 times on that site. Could it be the fact that I am connected to the internet threw a ethernet connection to my other computer which is a PC and is alot slower. Any ideas ?

As one of the previous posters mentioned, memory was my problem.

What I did was, as I had 1.5 GB in three 512MB chuncks, was to initially re-seat all the memory.

Once that didn't clear things up I extracted one chip, I did this till the machine became stable. I replaced the damaged RAM chip and everything has proceeded without problem.

Disks are another possible casue, but take a look at the RAM first.

You could also boot off the DVD and do a Disk Analyze/Repair on the root drive. Anyproblems and you may need to reformat, however if your problems re-occur get a new drive ASAP
