MacPro 23" Cinema display not working

I recently moved from overseas back to the USA with my MacPro desktop (circa 2006, 3Ghz, Xeon I believe) and 23" Apple display. When I go to boot up, I hear the familiar start-up chime and whirring of my hard drive, but the monitor does not display anything. There seems to be be power to the monitor as the lower right power indicator is lighting up (although it does blink twice, pause then blink again pattern). It looks like it's in sleep mode but I can't wake it up. I tried booting from an OSX installer disc and that did not help. I do not have another monitor (only MacBookPros) so I can't check if it is the monitor or video card by that method. HELP?

I suggest that you try a different display. It doesn't have to be an Apple model. Any display with a DVI connection will work. That will help you decide if it's the computer/video, or the display itself.
If the light on the display is blinking short-long-short, then repeats that, it's likely a faulty power brick. If you get a replacement, make sure it's for a 23-inch, as each size display has a different adapter. If it turns out to not be the power brick, then repairing that display may cost more than it's worth at this point. A good Apple repair shop can give you a good quote on that repair, if needed.

Don't have another monitor handy. The light on the display is blinking two flashes, pause, then one flash (like dot-dot-dash-dot in Morse code). If that is what you are describing, then hopefully it's just the power brick. Thanks for the advice on getting the correct one for the display.

So I replaced the 90W power supply as suggested (took a while to get one) and I still have the same problem. I get a star-up chime but the monitor is dead, just a blinking light in the bottom right of the monitor. Suggestions?

I just hooked up a different display & it works. So it is likely either my cables or the monitor (?). Suggestions? Where to buy xtra cables?
 
The cables are not removable, are they?
The flashing power LED on the display usually means the power brick. If that doesn't fix, then the display electronics board has likely failed. The internal parts for the display will be challenging to find. Apple doesn't provide internal parts lists, for example.
 
so if it is a board within the monitor then I assume this could only be fixed at the Apple store? I'm curious what it might cost vs. buying a replacement?
 
You will likely find out at an Apple service shop that it is not reasonable to pay for the repair of a 5 or 6 year old LCD display. (I could be wrong, so ask at a shop first)
The new Apple displays are mini DisplayPort only, and will not work with your DVI output.
Head down to your favorite electronics retailer for a good selection of displays that you can use.
