mail account setting conflict

For the last two days MAIL has been unable to send via my google apps account. It sends from one of my two regular gmail accounts instead. When I mark it "this server only" no sending at all.
Once I got an error message (while in MAIL preferences) saying that the gmail and google apps accounts/servers were in conflict, that the two servers are using the same address and authentication settings. Yes each uses smtp.gmail.com but the passwords are different, so the authentication settings are different. But I can't seem to convey that to MAIL.
This is a new problem and has not been an issue for the last few years. And both accounts work on my blackberry and on Thunderbird (which I just set up today to temporarily work around this problem).

Well check your Mail SMTP settings.

1. Open Mail.

2. Click on the menu item "Mail" and select in the drop-down "Preferences".

3. In the Preferences pop-up select the "Accounts" tab and hight the GMail account.

4. In the section of "OutGoing Mail Server(SMTP) and highlight the toggle bar and select 'Edit SMTP Server List' and check to make sure you have the correct SMTP server settings for GMAIL. What are the SMTP settings in Mail for you?

5. Follow Gmail's instructions and log into you web face GMAIL account and enable IMAP or POP, whatever you are using.
