MAIL and gmail

My MAIL is no longer able to send using the outgoing smtp gmail server using my well worn username and password. It works fine from the gmail webpage but not from MAIL. Strange because MAIL's "Connection Doctor" says the connection is fine.

What smtp server are you using, exactly? Which port is it using, and are you using TLS/SSL or any kind of encryption?

port 995

I'm using port 587 (not 995) and mine works. Try switching the port to 587.

Port 995 is for the incoming POP mail server, not the outgoing SMTP server.

OK, I tried 587 as well as 465. I get:
"Cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com"
"The sender address lmr11235@gmail.com was rejected by the server smtp.gmail.com."
I see the spinning wheel next to Inbox then get:
Mail can't verify the identity of "pop.gmail.com".
The reason (it says) is "This certificate is not valid (host name mismatch)
Weird. Is there a way to include screenshots in these messages?

Another clue perhaps:
I downloaded Thunderbird and gave it my gmail address. It proceeded to setup the account and (IMAP) and immediately downloaded two messages. But, when I used it to send (i.e. from gmail) it appeared to work but didn't deliver anything. So it's not just MAIL.
