Mail.app: auto-delete bulk mail?

I am getting a dozen or so "My Dear Mr." emails a day offering me a million dollars if I'd only agree to blah blah blah.

This wasn't a problem when they arrived in my INBOX. (I deleted them all so they are rule-erased when I quit the Mail session.) Now they are going into the BULK mailbox under one of my accounts and I can't figure out how to set up a rule to automatically get rid of them.

Rules don't seem to support bulk class of email and they don't get erased when I quit the Mail session.

I can't delete the BULK mailbox (hopefully, thereby, forcing these emails into JUNK).

I checked my online access to this account but there is no BULK mailbox on the server. (I thought I might setup a rule at that point.)

Help shows nothing for "bulk."

Ideas appreciated...

For questions of this sort, it would be helpful if you identified your email provider. You don't want to auto-delete bulk mail, junk mail, spam, or whatever it is called. This is because even the best email filters can sometimes wrongly identify legitimate messages as junk. I gather that your email provider uses IMAP. It appears that your provider has established a hidden server-side mailbox for spam. You do not want to delete this folder. You want to open and then to delete each spam message. You don't need to the read them. Hopefully, you can distinguish the Viagra ads from the acceptance email from Harvard.

Are you going to share that fix?
Someone else may have the same experience - and will notice that "I got it fixed" doesn't give too much information about the solution.

Too bad about the Harvard thing - that must be a real disappointment, eh? :D

Sure, but it had nothing to do with Mac OS or its apps.

I set up "SpamGuard" on my provider's web site, which was AT&T and is now Yahoo. Anything that looks like spam is kept there and not forwarded when I open Mail.app. I set the auto-delete time period to a week so I can browse the spam folder every so often to make sure it's all really junk mail.

Harvard, schmarvard.

I have used SpamSieve for a couple of years. I got fed up with my provider's idea of filtering - when I turned it off, there were 10,000 messages in the spam folder, waiting for me to go through them one-by-one. And I got fed up with having to do all that on a website.

Now I handle everything locally and, after a brief training period, 90+% are chucked automatically into the round file.

I live in the Peoples' Republic of New England. The correct spelling is: HAHVAHD.

Thanks Whitehill. If I could have handled it all locally I would have. The Mail app doesn't allow me to create a rule for the BULK folder that is associated with my IMAP email account. (It was a POP account when I was using MS Outlook for Mac, BTW.) I've decided to dump AT&T/Yahoo if I can't figure out a way to switch the account back to POP. I've got other email addresses. Now that AT&T is free, it seems to be a target for the cyberkids.

I like your Ben Franklin quote. We just saw Lincoln on Sunday - powerful movie. Highly recommended.

Hahvahd, schmahvahd. Better?

All the best to you contributors. DoctorV out.
