mail has a mind of its own

Panther 10.3.9 mail
When drafting a message which included a pdf the program stopped working with the message "311 messages indexing 1of2"
appearing. The draft cannot be deleted and I added another draft to check and that cannot be deleted either.
Mail has to be force quit and often it crashes out, but it is still possible to send and receive mail.
It seems to be stuck in a loop.

Time to reindex Mail. You have to do this via the Terminal. Please don't panic because all if you follow the steps you will have no problem:

1. Quit Mail.

2. Go to the folder /Applications/Utilities/ and launch the program "Terminal".

3. At the first Terminal prompt type: qlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum index;

4. Let it reindex and don't stop Terminal until another prompt comes back up.

5. Quit Terminal and then try Mail again.

This will reindex Mail and this might fix your problem, good luck.
