Mail not opening

Hi. I can't open Mail. When i try the whole "Welcome to Mail - you'll be guided through the necessary steps to set up your mail account" message comes up. It's been working perfectly fine, so I just don't get it.

I've used disk utilities to repair permissions etc and have re-booted...I've even closed it down and un-plugged it and then booted up again, but to no avail. I'm running OS 10.4.11.

The only thing I can think of that would cause something like this is that the computer wouldn't wake from it's sleep mode when I tried to turn it on earlier, so I pressed the off switch at the back to shut it down and to open it again.

Advise would be so gratefully received.

When you double-click the Mail app, that is the message you get? Can you delete it and reinstall it?

I typed "mac mail won't open" into google and a bunch of other forums came up... maybe a similar issue.

I have posted this fix so many times now my fingers are getting tired of posting these steps :) :

1. Write Down your Email server settings on paper because we are going to reset Mail without loosing Saved email in folders. Plus make sure there is nothing in the Inbox in Mail because it will also be blown away.

2. Quit Mail.

3. Navigate to the folder /YpourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ and find the file com.apple.mail.plist and move it you Trash Can.

3. Relaunch Mail and set up your email server settings again. All the Saved email should still be in Mail if you saved the email to custom folders.

4. If everything works out well you can empty Trash or if you want out the com.apple.mail.plist you took out back to the original spot.

Deleting a files Preferences file in/ Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ will reset that program to almost default. This s a very old Mac fix that you should learn to fix program problems.
