Mail not showing emails after OS upgrade

I just upgraded from OS X 10.4 to 10.5.6 and now my mail seems to be having issues. All the setting in the preferences seem fine, but non of the emails I had in the inbox, Sent and my folders are showing. I have the feeling the is doing something as if I try to shut down my computer, it tells me that mac mail is timing out the shut down, but it has been like this for several hours.

What should I do here? What is going on?

I bet you did the standard upgrade because the fix is all over the net. First of all QUIT Mail.

1. Navigate to the folder /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/.

2. in that folder find the files "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" and move them to Trash.

3. Restart Mail.

If that still doesn't work QUIT Mail again and reindex Mail by reading the Macword article A possible fix for a slow Mail app. one word though, the larger size email boxes the indexing will take longer.
