Mail not working

I have already read numerous threads on this topic but NONE have helped me so I'm wondering if anyone could help me.

Yesterday mail was working just fine, I quit it as you're supposed to and then left my MacBook (Mac OS X Running version 10.5.8-sorry I'm not sure what other info is needed!!) on overnight. Today, whenever I try to open Mail it comes up with the message "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X"

I have Repaired Disk Permissions & Restarted but I don't know what else to try.

If anyone could help me that would be brilliant, thank you. And sorry if the answer is already here and I haven't seen it I have searched extensively but I'm new here and nothing helped! Thanks.

I have version 3.5, so how can I update? I have ran the software update and installed everything which came up AND restarted and still no change. Thank you for taking the time to reply it's really appreciated.

I checked it was there (it was but still not opening with the same message) and then installed the update from the link and now there is NO mail application on my mac...ANYWHERE!!! Sorry but is there ANYTHING I can do this is driving me INSANE!

Did you, perchance, move the Mail.app application itself out of it's default location in /Applications (i.e., did you try and do some "house cleaning" or "organizing" of your Applications folder and move applications into different locations or subfolders)?

Yes..I've realised this was probably a very bad idea now after reading some other threads -.- but I moved it back before I did the update to the original location in the Apps folder.

What you probably want to do in this case is to restore the original Mail.app application bundle from your Mac OS X Install/Restore discs that came with your computer (or a retail set, if you've upgraded since then) using a utility called "Pacifist."

Once you extract the Mail.app bundle back to your /Applications folder (and vow to never try and "organize" that folder again!), then you can download and install the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo updater that DeltaMac linked to. That should bring your Mail.app bundle up-to-date.

Never move anything around in the /Applications folder. I realize that the folder itself can grow quite large after installing many programs, but you MUST resist the urge to clean up and organize -- instead, use aliases and folders elsewhere on your drive to "organize" into the structure that you'd like. The /Applications folder is supposed to contain all your apps, and is not meant for you to dive into and organize... that's what the Dock and aliases are for.

Good luck, and let us know if you need any help using Pacifist -- there are quite a few experts here that have used that program successfully to do exactly what you're trying to do.

Thanks SO much and I will DEFINITELY remember this in future! I will check that out now and come back for any help! Thanks for being so helpful!
