Mail -> Swapping POP3 to IMAP without losing mail?

Right now I've got an IMAP/POP3 compatible email account.

I configured Mail to read it as a POP3 account, so all the mail gets downloaded and removed from the server.

Now, I want to fix Mail so it accesses my mailserver with IMAP. How do I do that so I don't download all the mail from my server, and don't lose any of the local messages which have already been downloaded?

I'm pretty surethis works...

leave your account a POP3. In Mail, go to Preferences > Accounts > Click on the account > Edit > Advanced.

there should be this option:

"remove copy from server after retrieving a message."


tweak that to your liking.
