Maintenance for older versions?

IS apple really bad at providing maintenance for old versions of OS X?

I haven't gotten notice for a security update for OS 10.3 ever since OS 10.4 came out.

I also need to get a hold of Xcode 1.5 but all the links for it have disappeared.

If apple assumes that everyone should shell out cash to upgrade their OS every year I think that's unfair

There have been numerous Security Updates for 10.3.9. Check out this list for specifics.

Apple generally supports the previous system as far as Security updates go, and if there's a very critical problem, they'll release an update for Jaguar as well, but a full minor version (10.3.8, .9 etc) generally only comes out for the most recent release (since the bugs of the previous OS are generally worked out by that point).

IIRC, 10.3.9 actually came out after 10.4.0 was released.

thx for the help

- the link for xcode 1.5 ends up redirecting to apples' developer page - so it doesnt' help.

any other ideas?

also - how do I know if I'm up to date on security? thx

To be absolutely sure you've gotten all the security updates that Apple has provided for your version of OS X, simply run Software Update -- any security updates that you don't have will appear and you can download and install them.

If nothing shows up, you're good to go and up to date.

alright - well not to piss and moan about this.... but I'm genuinely concerned about these things.

I used to get fairly frequent security updates - It seems like soon, or relatively soon after 10.4 came out they stopped...

that seems to imply that apple stopped working on 10.3

am I wrong? From a security perspective this seems like a really bad idea.

and also - none of the above links for Xcode are working, they all go to websites which then direct you to developer.apple.com or some page on that site which will give you xcode 2.2 I've only been an apple user for a year(came from linux) but it seems like apple's old-version support is really lacking

I'm currently trying pacifist. hopefully that will work

ok - I can't find xcode on install disk #1.. is that correct? I looked through the tree structure and did a find on the disk in pacifist. disk 2 is all pdfs....

anyone know where it's at?

thanks for all your help - I will be really disappointed with apple if it turns out that their support for previous versions is as bad as I suspect

Apple still fully supports 10.3. Security holes will continue to be patched until 10.3 is no longer supported (much like 10.2 is now).

The reason you're probably seeing fewer Software Update entries is that when a new OS comes out (like 10.4), then Apple typically stops adding new features to the older OS, and only releases security patches. Expect all your future Software Update updates for 10.3 to be fixes for security holes or patches for vulnerabilities, or similar fixes/updates.
