Manually change Resolution in a pref file?

Is there a possibility to manually change the resolution of a monitor in a pref file somewhere in the systemX folder, or library folder? Im running a PowerBook Pismo, and the farthest my lcd screen can go is 1024 x 768. is there anyways to override this? i remember there was a classic application that could do this, but it never worked on my pismo, but it did on my brothers PowerMac G3 Yosemite (i forget the monitor model type). it allowed his screen to go to resolutions not supported by his current Mac OS. is it possible to do something similar in osx on my comp?

LCD screens have a fixed resolution. Because of this, no laptop screen will ever go beyond the max resolution offered. As far as reducing the res goes, it is only emulating a lower res while still using the same # of pixels. That's why it does not work.

If I remember right, that software simply allowed all available resolutions to show up in the monitor control panel resolution list, But you can't override the hardware itself, not all available resolutions can be allowed by all hardware.

My old monitor wont let me go over 1024x786 :( I so need a new monitor. I'll have to bring that up in my reivew :)
