MavX disc burning issues

I seem unable to burn a DVD, but CD's are OK.

If I insert a blank DVD & it shows up as "Untitled DVD.fpbf" on my desktop. I drag a test TEXT file (86kb) to the disc & then drag the disc to the burn icon in the dock. The window that opens lets me type name & select burn speed. The burn speed dropdown list says "Maximum possible (2x)"

The computer burns the disc. At the end it verifies & says the disc may have a problem. The disc is still blank & afterwards is recognised as a blank disc (even though it has been apparently burned)

If I try to burn a DVD using iMovie or other DVD software (Adobe Encore) then I get an error saying the process could not complete.

CD's burn fine.

I went though 10 DVD's like this, then I went out & bought a different brand (TDK) - I am now on the 4th TDK, with the same result. So I guess after 14 discs, something is wrong.

If I check Sys Info while a blank disc is in the drive it recognises the DVD.

This is on a day-2 clean installation of Mavericks. I wiped my computer clean, installed MAV from a boot disc. I did not recover or migrate any old system data.

Any ideas?

Sometimes dust can stick to the lens. So get a thin microfiber cloth and wrap it around a credit card size card. After doing that very gently put it into the slot the get it near the top and very gently pull it out.

Then use a Burn folder, drag files to that folder then use that folder to burn the disks.

Good Luck.

Plus here is an understanding video:

Thanks for the advice.

Now I get this error after the disc burns*

The disc can’t be burned because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022).

Yes. I used micro fiber cloth as suggested around a credit card. It inserted about 70% of the card in the top end of the disc slot. I also used canned air in the slot in case of dust.

Additionally I tried using the terminal "drutil burn test" (for a folder called test) this appeared to burn the disc but then resulted in a similar communication error.

It's strange that the drive seems to function fine for everything except write dvd. Read/write cd is ok & read DVD is ok.

Not strange at all.
The DVD burn function is a separate hardware function within the burner - partly due to the need for the burn laser that needs several times the accuracy to burn a DVD, compared to burning CDs.

If you have already reinstalled OS X, and there's no particular change, then it's likely time for hardware changes. Cheapest (and by by easiest) is an external burner. Or, if you are still in warranty, then Apple needs to be involved...

OK, I had a feeling that would be the outcome.
Unfortunately its just not worth me buying a DVD burner or repairing it since this is only the 2nd time in 3 years I actually needed to burn a disc.

Nevertheless, I appreciate you guys helping out :) Thanks.
