I try to boot under install DVD to run diskUtil on my internal HD

Although the DVD is seen as booting source, it will never complete the boot and hangs in grey + apple. DVD spins then falls asleep forever.

The same when I boot from a full copy of the DVD on a FiWi external HD (used to boot, I installed a computer that way)

Apparently my mac does not allow booting on external source anymore!!!

I zapped the PRAM and did a safe mode startup before trying again .. no better

As I canot boot, the option of clean install is not available.

I still need to try shared/netboot and FiWi mode diskutil from other laptop but no much hope there.

Any idea?

Thanks

What color is that disc? Gray?

Did it come with that MacBook Pro? If it's a gray disc, and it didn't (even if it shipped with the same model of MacBook Pro that shipped just a few weeks earlier or later than yours), that could be the cause. The install discs shipping with new Macs are bound to specific models, initial builds they were shipped with, and specific manufacturing date ranges too, so a different disc would not work.

Any chance it could be the disc that came with your other Mac?

Can you boot the system to the version of OS X that is installed?

A MacBook Pro (model identifier MacBookPro6,2) will not boot to OS X 10.6.
It shipped with OS X 10.6.3, and will need at least that version.
So, we need to know exactly what you see on the label of the OS X installer that you are trying to use.

Thanks Giaguara.
The DVD is a snow install DVD I bought when it came out to upgrade my leopard former system. It has worked then and this was more than 1 year ago without any boot issue until recently (??). The DVD is compatible, it is the mac which refuses to boot on external source. The DVD drive works and burns as well as reads DVDs no problem either.

I also tried to boot on the MBP own install DVD (leopard 10.5) - same issue.

If your MacBook Pro is the same one that you listed in your first post (MacBookPro6,2), then your MacBook Pro is too new for either Leopard, or a Snow Leopard version older than 10.6.3 - which is the OS X version that it would have shipped with.
The point to remember: A new Mac comes with a particular version of OS X plus the other Apple software that was bundled with it. A Mac will almost never boot to an older version of OS X than the version that it shipped with.
So, the Leopard, and the Snow Leopard disk older than OS X 10.6.3 will not work
You need to use either the restore disks that came with your MacBook Pro, or a newer version of the commercial OS X install.
In fact, the original DVDs that came in the box with your new MacBook Pro will be OS X version 10.6.3, and are probably the only version of Snow Leopard that will install, because Apple stopped the commercial OS X installer at version 10.6.3 - which is a slightly older set of software than the restore set that you should have. So, you can install from your original set - or from a Lion install.

Hi DeltaMac

It is true that my machine is currently 10.6.8 after several updates in the last year BUT ....

My macbook came with 10.5 installed and the DVD which came with the MBP does not boot more today than the newer 10.6 full install bought separately from my mac last year.

Nothing boots on this machine, it is not a question of version. If I could boot from any of the media I tried, I could run diskutility from which is precisely why I am here now.

I could also do a clean install and reinstall the whole stuff BUT I cannot boot from a DVD nor from a FiWi copy of the snow install-DVD.

Thanks for your post anyway.

Your first post listed a different MacBook Pro... which did not come with 10.5 installed, and will not boot to something older than 10.6.3
If that's the one that you have, then you are trying to use software that is too old.

Do you have more than one MacBook Pro?

You can help clear this up by telling us exactly which model of MacBook Pro you have...
The processor speed and screen size will help, but looking in your System Profiler to double check what you have, as you posted in your initial post, will be most helpful :D

Appologies!

my macbook Pro is a 6.2 i7 monoblock aluminum 15" case and IS the one listed on the top post.

However, you are right about the snow upgrade which refers to my former (and stolen) older MBP.
I need to check home for my install DVDs but I read version 6.?? on it while trying to boot earlier this week.

This could indeed explain why the full install DVD does not boot.

I really need to check the computer install DVD before proceeding here

Thanks so much for refreshing my mind, you have probably found part of the answer and I may just have used a pre 10.6.3 DVD from one of my kids MB-white to try boot.

I see this tonight

Cheers and thanks for the great support

Final post on this thread.

DeltaMac was 1000% right. My true original DVD was hidden with other DVS and is indeed version 10.6.3 which boot without a problem/

I could run diskUtilities finally.

Thanks to your patience and for insisting I was wrong, I was indeed.
This forum gave me the support I was needing and I am very grateful.

Cheers,
Stephane
