I keep getting a message from a safari notice to protect my browser from mcAfee virus. How do I stop this?

I erased the hard drive. I re-installed using my Time Machine drive. The problem has not re-appeared!

Only get software from Mac store or the web site of a business! It sounds like you feel for a scam! Plus learn that web site including this won pot text ,Essie’s in cookies in your browser.. What browser were you using?

It could just very well be a pop up ad that came from a web site that dropped a cookie on your system. Some of these web sites are getting creative in annoying us.

In the future if you get this again what browser you are and delete all you cookies and think history about once every 2 months!

Glad it’s gone, but wiping the whole drive was probably a bigger hammer than you needed.

Those “McAfee found a virus” messages are very often just scareware from a website, ad, or browser notification permission rather than an actual infection. Facebook ads can definitely send you to some sketchy pages.

If it ever happens again, I’d first check Safari’s website notification permissions, extensions and website data before doing a full restore. And definitely never click the warning itself.

At least the Time Machine restore got you back to a clean working setup.
