Memory loss

I've noticed at times the amount of hard drive space I have remaining will suddenly drop about 200 or more MB. Rebooting seems to take care of this. Is this a paging issue brought on my running apps and active processes?

Depends... how much RAM do you have? If you have 384 or less, the memory loss you're experiencing is probably due to the memory swap file created by OS X... nothing to be alarmed about -- go out and get some cheap RAM while it's still affordable!

I have 512 k of ram and a 10 gig HD. So, this is normal? I've dropped another 100+ megs in the last two hours. Is there anything I can do to get this space back (beside the obvious quitting apps)?

Well, 200MB is probably the most it will use up. I've noticed this same occurrence, and I've got 1GB of RAM in my machine!

I am 99% sure it's the swap file for memory that's taking up this space... and I've never noticed it go above 200MB. 512Mb of RAM should be enough to run basic programs, although if you're keeping a LOT of programs open, that could be the reason your system is paging out memory to the disk.

The only way to recover this space, as far as I know, is to restart.
