Memory Upgrade for G5

I have a G5:
Model: PowerMac 12,1
Power PC G5 (3.1) CPU
CPU speed 2.1 GHz
L2 Cache 512kb
Memory 512Mb
Bus Speed 700Mhz

I want to add memory to get up to at least 1Mb. One shop told me to add two 256Mb memory cards. Another shop said I could just add a 1Mb memory card. Which one knows what they're talking about...or could both be correct?

Thanks for any assistance offered.

I think you mean 1gb not mb ! :D Anyway, they're both right. It depends on how many free slots you have left in your machine. If you only have one slot left you could get a stick of 512 to bring what you already have up to 1gig, if you have two spare you could get 2 sticks of 256mb, etc etc. Hope this helps.

You can just go to OWC and choose your Mac to see what kind of RAM you can use. If it is the Power Mac G5 then you have to add memory in matched pairs.

Also make sure you get your memory from a place that support a guaranty because OS X is picky about accepting only good memory.

If your system info is correct, then you have an iMac G5 iSight model, which has only one memory slot, with 512MB permanently on the logic board. You can add a 512MB (or 1GB - or up to 2GB) by installing in that one slot. The correct memory to purchase will be one chip of DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200 (533 MHz))

DeltaMac, you are 'spot on'. It is an iMac G5 iSight model with only one memory slot. Thanks for your help. I'll be out buying memory this afternoon.
Go Blue Hens!
