Microsoft Applications crashing

Not to long ago I was using the Microsoft Word application on my computer to edit some cover letters I had written when I had come to a problem: It seems that when I go to "Save" or "Save as"under the file menu the program unexpectedly quits, losing al my hard work. This has also occured with my micrisoft powerpoint and appleworks. I have been using all three of these applications for a while now and have never have had this problem. Is there a way to fix this? If so can someone please help.

I have pleanty of space on my hard drive it is not this, any other suggestions or fixes to correct the problem of applications unexpectedly crashing? I need help
