Microsoft Works for Mac files converted

Many of my Microsoft Works (for Mac) 3.0.0 files have somehow converted to Unix Executable Files. Most of these files were created on a G3 Power Mac running 9.2.2 and are currently on my Mac Mini also running 9.2.2 along with 10.4.11. They were transferred to the Mini by copying to an Iomaga zip disc then copying to the Mini. The only way I can open the files is to use TextEdit.app but the format is gone and extra hieroglyphics are added. Any suggestions as to how to convert them back?

Thanks.

Try performing a "File > Open" from within Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works, locating the file on the hard drive, then opening it. If that works, you may be able to perform a simple "Save" command to restore the file's application association (i.e., get rid of the "UNIX executable" genericism).

Also... do these files have the file extension in the filename? If not, try adding the file extension (.doc for Microsoft Word, .xls for Excel, etc.) and see if that restores the application association.

More than likely this was caused by using a FAT32-formatted Zip disk, which may have obliterated the Macintosh-specific metadata that goes with those files (such as resource forks, creator codes, and the like).
