More problems installing OSX

I have a G4 ibook, with a blank HD and when I boot from the CD on my ibook, it goes to a white screen with a gray apple icon in the center and it ust sits there. I'm sorry if I'm kind of vague or repeating a previous problem, but I can't seem to find a similiar thread on the forum and apple's site is no help.
 
What kind of CD are you booting from, an OS X CD? Is it a generic install, or a grey, system-specific one? What version of OS X is it? Are you sure that your CD is good? Are you sure that your CD drive is good?
 
CD's, black with a grey X on them, my understanding is its 10.4 and I'm pretty sure the CD is good because it is borrowed from someone else who's used it with no problems. And I'm sure the CD drive is good.
 
Are you holding down the "C" key, or pressing the "option" key to change to the CD as a bootup device?
 
Look at the label of the DVD. It will tell you the OS X 10.4 version.
If your iBook is only a few months old, then it requires 10.4.2 or higher. 10.4 won't boot, and won't work. There are newer versions of the commercial OS X installer - either 10.4.3 or 10.4.6. Either will work for you. 10.4 will not, it's too old.
A disk that works in another Mac, does not necessarily mean that it will work in yours, if yours is newer....
 
I've done it holding down the option key and just letting it run naturally and since its a fresh HD, it automatically finds the CD is a boot source.

The book is almost 1.5-2 years old.
 
Can't do a Target install, its the only mac I got. And don't have the money to by another install set.
 
Is there a screw that completes a circuit or safety precaution inside a ibook? Because there is a loose one rolling around inside the case.


Is it possible that I need a set of ibook restore disks? not just an OSX install set?
 
There shouldn't be a loose screw inside the iBook...

In any case, since your iBook is a few years old, you should be able to just install Tiger via the Tiger discs. The System Restore discs are not needed.
 
Hello There, you said you borrowed the OS discs from a friend - any chance of your friend popping your new hard drive into his mac and doing the initializing and installing and then giving it back to you to fit in your Mac?
