I would not ascribe the word innovation to this concept, I think innovation should be applied to invention, or conception, or design. Microsoft or Dell doesn't display much of that. So where does this loosely-defined garbage have relevance to our Mac support world, anyway?

All this shows is brand recognition. The fact that Apple is #3 is pretty impressive given the nature of the polling. The fact that Dell is on the list at all shows that those polled have no idea what innovation actually is.
Does Dell actually do any R&D? Have they ever been first to market with anything? I mean actually first. Lets not forget Dell said his company had the first laptops with built in wireless networking even though they were released almost a full year after Apple started including AirPort in PowerBooks and iBooks.

Not to mention "Automatic power supply selector for ACPI-compliant PCI devices" appears 4 times.

Innovation requires demand.

And what does that have to do with innovation?
Business success can be achieved in the absence of innovation, happens everyday.
There is no demand for what isn't there. There is no link between innovation and demand. Innovation happens all the time without demand. Generating demand is the best way to exploit innovation.
Exploitation requires demand.
Exploitation doesn't require the originator of the innovation. Just good marketing.

Devlin - as a scientist, i can tell you that there is nothing valid about this 'study'. innovation was operationally defined (meaning they created their own meaning for the sake of the study). it's another case of your finding an opinion that you know will rile every body up. there's really nothing to see here. the bigger thing is that in such a skewed study, apple still managed to be third which means that they are doing an awful lot of things right given that so many pc users have so much ignorance about them.
