That was funny :)
let me quote leonard cohen:
"try to go on, take my books, take my gun, remember my son how they lied."
-Night comes on, Varoius positions.

- - quote from this press release
" Rebellion is out, relating is in. Twenty-six (26%) percent of companies define innovation as “a solution” that identifies and addresses the unmet needs of consumers. Very few associated innovation with a more likely term such as “discovery” or “revolution.” ??

So this would be innovation from a business perspective, not a technical view. Dell is pretty handy at providing solutions.

I would not ascribe the word innovation to this concept, I think innovation should be applied to invention, or conception, or design. Microsoft or Dell doesn't display much of that. So where does this loosely-defined garbage have relevance to our Mac support world, anyway?

I agree. Bad definiton of "innovation," and, thusly, I do not agree with this list. Especially Dell. Definitely not and "innovator"

All this shows is brand recognition. The fact that Apple is #3 is pretty impressive given the nature of the polling. The fact that Dell is on the list at all shows that those polled have no idea what innovation actually is.

Does Dell actually do any R&D? Have they ever been first to market with anything? I mean actually first. Lets not forget Dell said his company had the first laptops with built in wireless networking even though they were released almost a full year after Apple started including AirPort in PowerBooks and iBooks.

http://www.dell.com/us/en/gen/corporate/patent.htm

Takes a long time to load. Most of it's bull anyway. "Intelligent LCD brightness control system". Not to mention "Automatic power supply selector for ACPI-compliant PCI devices" appears 4 times.

Geez, I don't think the average consumer cares one hoot about most of the stuff on that list, or even understands it.

I think Microsoft has stolen more technology than they have ever innovated, so I think this study is skewed.

Microsoft??WTF!!??
Stealing and/or buying other
peoples work and calling
it your own is NOT
innovating!

Dell became one of the most successful tech companies in the world.

Already a 42 billion dollar company.

Micheal Dell is the 10th richest man in the world.

He must have done some innovations in business that lead him to his success.

Segway was innovative, but for its cost, it would probably never be successful.

Innovation requires demand.

MS, Dell have alot of demand , and apple not too far either.

And what does that have to do with innovation?

He must have done some innovations in business that lead him to his success.

Business success can be achieved in the absence of innovation, happens everyday.

Innovation requires demand.

There is no demand for what isn't there. There is no link between innovation and demand. Innovation happens all the time without demand. Generating demand is the best way to exploit innovation.

Exploitation requires demand.

Exploitation doesn't require the originator of the innovation. Just good marketing.

His opinion doesn't matter to me, why would I care what he says? Why would I take the time to write him (wasted enough time just reading the article)?

Oh, wait, is this guy your Dad? Is that why you think what he says has any more weight than what anyone else says?

Wow, yet you care what I say? Even though, he and the author are basing it on a study and work for a popular known website.

While you are giving personel preference in your opinion about the article.

Devlin - as a scientist, i can tell you that there is nothing valid about this 'study'. innovation was operationally defined (meaning they created their own meaning for the sake of the study). it's another case of your finding an opinion that you know will rile every body up. there's really nothing to see here. the bigger thing is that in such a skewed study, apple still managed to be third which means that they are doing an awful lot of things right given that so many pc users have so much ignorance about them.

Personal preference? In an opinion??? No shit! I mean, who actually does that? I didn't know RacerX was entitled to his own personal preference in his own opinion. Wow, what an eye opener that is for me! :p

Seriously, what the hell is your deal, Devlin? All you ever do when you come on this board is hawk AMD, Microsoft and Dell, and nobody wants to hear (or, excuse me—this is a message board, after all—read) it. I mean, do you consider yourself the Wintel world's own personal messiah or something? Are you coming here to convert all the Mac-loving heathens to your evil passion? Have we sinned, with you as our one true savior? :p

I really wish you'd stop coming here and starting flame wars, because that's all you're going to get. If you like your iMac, that's fine, share it with us. If it gives you trouble, then ask us a question. If you decide to put it to sleep with the fishes and submerse yourself in your personal heaven of Blue Screens of Death and benchmarks, then fine; just don't tell us because we couldn't give a rat's ass.

Right on target! So, VERY true ;)
