Hi. I have an iBook that has Appleworks on it that I would like to copy (not move) to a used G4 I just bought on Ebay. Both machines have OS 10.4.3 on them and I would like to know if I can use a regular Ethernet cable which I have, or do I need a crossover cable. I don't quite understand the steps one has to go through after connecting the two machines which I assume you should do when both machines are turned off. If someone can point me to an explanation I would really be grateful. Thanks. Dean M

Keeping in mind that AppleWorks is still being sold by Apple, and you don't have a license to use one copy of AppleWorks on every Mac that you have.
However, that G4 Mac would have likely shipped originally with AppleWorks so:

Get USB flash drive
Insert USB flash drive into your iBook
Copy AppleWorks to that flash drive.
move flash drive to your other computer.
copy AppleWorks to the other computer.

I didn't realize you couldn't use Apple apps. on any machines you personally owned.
Barring that, I did try to use a thumb drive to copy Appleworks, but it ran out of space. Apparently Appleworks is several gigs. I really only need the word processor and would copy only that if I could........Thanks for taking the time. Dean M

No, I didn't say that you couldn't use Apple apps, only that AppleWorks is commercial software, still being sold. It used to come on most Macs, until the Intel Macs started shipping, and yours likely shipped originally with AppleWorks. The AppleWorks license allows use on the Mac that it is installed on. You can't legally copy it around. What you do in your own case is up to your own personal ethics.
I think some would say here that I am close to violating board rules about helping with pirating software, but there you are... you should be able to put AppleWorks on a Mac that would have come with it installed.
AppleWorks, in its folder is less than 70MB, so you have a LOT of documents in that folder which you could sort out. The AppleWorks app, by itself, is only about 25MB, and either will easily copy to a flash drive. You just need to look through some of the enclosed folders for your own personal stuff (things that you have named, for example), and don't copy those files....

To answer the question about ethernet, you would need a crossover cable to connect two computers directly. You don't need to shut the computers down; just hook 'em up, and go to the "Sharing" section of System Preferences. Turn on Personal File Sharing, and you should then be able to access the files on that machine from the other machine by opening the Network in the Finder (under the Go menu).
Whether that makes more sense than using a flash drive is another matter. Depends on what all that extra stuff is and whether you want to move it as well or just the AppleWorks application.

well, on a pc he'd need a crossover cable, but almost all macs with a g4 cpu have autoswitching ports with allow you to use any cable you have. don't ask me to remember where i learned that fact, because i can't remember, but i have found it to be true when i put it to the test on my da/466.
