I can't understand what the difference is between "MS Office v. X for Mac - Complete package" and "Microsoft Office Mac v.X Full Version." Can someone fill me in? The price is sure different!

Actually, the only programs I am interested in are WORD and Excel. Personally I do not like these programs and only want them as other people send me files created in these programs. As I understand it, the is the "MS Office v. X for Mac - Complete package" is refered to as the "Student and Teacher Edition. Would it work for my purpose? Do I really have to be a student or teacher to buy it? ::ha::

You should be a student or a teacher to buy it. But you could try OpenOffice.org before to see if you would like that and if it'd do all that you need. Open Office is open source software, and legally free. You'll need X11 to use it with, but if you'll decide to try it I'm sure you can find here a lot of people to guide you with its use. :)

There are two programs called icword and icexcel (or something like this) that will let you read Word and Excel documents, though you can't edit with them.

Officially, only Word and Excel, but you can try G's suggestion if you're willing to dig into UNIX.

actually, if you only need basic support, there are several solutions. MacLinkPlus (not sure if it made it to X or not, last ver. i had was 12 deluxe) can convert many file types, into a format you CAN open.
Appleworks has basic support for Word files, im not sure about excel though. search on versiontracker for .doc or Word or something simmilar.. you could also pirate office if you feel really niggly @ ms for making the formats "closed"

You don't need to be an expert UNIX hacker to use OpenOffice, it's all really easy, believe me. Dig around a bit in the Unix/X11 forum: there are plenty suggestion on how to install, configure and use Unix apps. There are some very nice GUI's for Unix apps around.
For .doc and .xls files, you might consider Abiword and Gnumeric. These are free opensource apps, that let you open, edit and save in Office formats.

Converting Word files to RTF will allow you to open them in TextEdit. Sadly, Apple packages no simple spreadsheet editor with OS X.

...but AppleWorks always gets me out of a pinch in this scenario.
