hi u guys.
Whenever I sign in to mac and leave the computer alone for a while messenger will sign off automatically. it will say smth like (you have been signed out for some reason). ...
can anyone tell me why it is signing me off all the time?? sry im new to mac.. maybe its smth to do with the energy saving settings?? bt its actually not going into standby i think.. id appreciate ur help! Thanks!
J

UPDATE: Here is exactly what it says all the time: "The system is unavailable now so you have been logged out of MS Messenger." And thats it. I figured it could be a connection problem since I am using WiFi at home. Bt the connections supposed to be alright, im only 2 rooms next to the router... any ideas how I can ensure that the connection is alwas stable? thank you!

Check energy saver settings in System Preferences, and drag the "put the computer to sleep" slider to "Never".

Hi Nio,

Just a polite request if I may, and please don't take this the wrong way... A lot of your typing is done in something similar to mobile phone txt speak (which exists because of space limitations). When it's done on a page such as this it just looks lazy and a little difficult to read.

Hi Nio (I'm only assuming that's your name),

I take it you tried the 'setting the sleep slider to never' and it made no difference (which I doubted it would!). My Mac goes to sleep and MSN stays logged in just fine, so it's not that.

I too sometimes return to my Mac, and upon waking it/cancelling the screen saver, find the same message and have to log on again. I'm sure I've even noticed it do it whilst I'm on the machine doing something else. There's nothing apparent in MSN's preferences, so it aint in there!

But I notice you are on WiFi. I too run my MBP on WiFi (Apple's Airport) and sometimes I notice the connection has dropped - albeit momentarilly - when I'm surfing. This would be enough to make MSN have to be re-connected!

I think - unless someone says otherwise - that it's something we have to live with.

If you can plug into ethernet, you can see if that is the issue. You may want to try using Adium, an alternative MSN client that has better OS X support.

@ Darth

Thanks for your response. I can confirm that it has nothing to do with the sleep mode. As you said, sometimes MSN signs off even when I am on the computer. So apperently there must be something wrong with the WiFi settings. The question is: Why is there something wrong with WiFi. I just switched from PC to Mac. On the PC WiFi worked perfectly and never dropped the connection. Do I have do change any settings?? Any further ideas? Thanks for your help.

Update: I have two WiFi routers at home. I tried both of them and it happens with both of them..

Hi Nio,

Not aware of any cure or settings change. My son's Mac is connected to t'internet via network cable and he gets his MSN doing the same thing!!

On the subject of using different software to chat (as in Eric's suggestion) I recently looked into using Apple's iChat instead. I would prefer to use this but from what I saw/tried it was a bit complicated! Maybe I'll look on this forum to see if it's possible/easy.

I have the same problem... it never happens on my roommate's PC, and never happens to me when I am hooked up through an ethernet cord. Sigh.

Ahaha... yes, I just downloaded it. It's the first msn-messenger alternative I've found that can actually receive offline messages (amsn claims to be able to but freezes every time I let it try to retrieve them). AND it has this crazy ability to let you have random colors for each message! Fun for a while.

Too bad for the guy I was dating a month ago that I got all those offline messages now and not when I was waiting for him to get a hold of me.... ah heheheh... yeahhhh. Woops.

Hopefully that won't happen as often anymore. Thanks for the advice!!
