MSN messenger problems

I may be being dumb here, but I don't seem to be able to get msn into the hard drive. I have to keep an external harddrive icon on the desk top to use the new version. What ever I do, dragging icons or disk images etc to the hard drive nothing works. What am I doing wrong? I did it before (but it was a long time ago ...I don't often use msn). I'm feeling a bit stupid at the moment. ome one please restore me to feeling not like a total idiot :D

After you've double-clicked the .dmg file and the disk image mounts to the desktop, does it show the application icon with the name on it or does it end in .pkg? If it ends in .pkg, then you need to double click that file to install the package. If it's just the application icon, you need to drag that and drop it into the Applications folder on your hard drive. Once you've done that, then eject the drive image by dragging it to the Trash (the Trash icon should change to an eject icon as you drag the drive image to it).

No .pkg after anything. I tried dragging the disk image to applications and then ejecting it, but every time I try to open MSN from apps, the disk image turns up on the desktop. I wouldn't mind but I'm a mucky pup and have a pretty cluttered desktop as it is without all this!

You need to mount the .DMG image by first double-clicking the file that ends in ".dmg". When the disk image is mounted (should look like a white removable hard drive on your desktop), double-click that to view the contents.

Inside that white removable hard drive should be the application itself, which can then be dragged to the Applications folder.

You shouldn't be dragging the .dmg file, the "disk image", or the white removable hard drive to Applications... you should be dragging what's inside of the mounted disk image to Applications. I know it seems a bit weird being a multi-step process and all, but it's quite intuitive after you do it a few times:

1) mount disk image
2) open mounted disk image
3) drag what's inside to Applications

I hope that helps!

Nono...don't drag the disk image. Double click the .dmg file and Mac os X will proceed to mount a virtual disk from that .dmg file onto your desktop. Open that virtual disk and you'll see the application icon in there. Drag the application icon to the Applications folder located on your hard drive. Then once it's finished copying, drag the virtual disk image to the Trash.

OK, I did it the way you guys said (thanks BTW! :) ), but as soon as I open MSN I get the flippin' virtual disk image on my desktop again! and I can't get rid of the disk image on the desktop til I close msn.

Am I missing something out?

i would say at this point, start again. bin all traces of this .dmg and msn, download it afresh, and start again.

successfully download the .dmg package. double click it. a disk image appears as a white removable disk.

open it. don't double click or open msn. instead, drag it and drop it into your applications folder. make sure it copied it across properly, and then eject the Disk Image. now, and only now, launch msn from your applications folder. delete everything else.

Thanks

It's odd. I have binned everything except the user cache in preferences (I searched the HD). If I click on the icon in the dock to be sure another disk image comes up and msn signs me in. Should I bin the cache in prefs? I've buggered things up by binning prefs so I'd like to be sure first :)
