Mute audio entry

I have a problem with Panther. When I plug a microphone or a jack on my micro entry, there is no sound coming out from my computer. There is a sound signal cause the volume scale is reacting to what I'm playing.
In the souds prefs, I've specified the audio entry as the one to use.
I use my internal speakers.
The headphones entries are free. I have a disk-burner on one of the firewire plug, my printer and my ASDl modem on the 2 USB plugs.
How can I resolve my problem?

what hardware is it?

I have an Imac G3 with a 500mhz processor, 128 RAM.
I'm using the last version of Panthe. I really don't understand what the matter with this...

To hear what your microphone is picking up, you have to enable playback through your audio output device (your speakers). I have not found a way to do this in OS X, though it's simple in 9 (just check a small box). To test your sound connection, download a recording app like Audacity or Cacaphony, record it, and play it back.

I've tried this. The sound is played by the speakers when I play the recording back. But still no sound when I play "live". I wonder if the modem has anything to deal with it...

I don't think it's possible to make your iMac into a "playthrough" amplifier like you want. You'll need an application that can record sound through the "audio in" set in System Preferences, then you can play back that recording with an application that can play through the "audio out" set in System Preferences.

Arden's right -- this was supported in OS 7/8/9, but I don't think it's supported in OS X yet.

Mmmh..;that sucks! I mean it's difficult to record something on an existing track if you can't hear what you're playing...That's really strange it can't be done with mac OS X, I thought it was somethng natural to use my iMac as an amp...
Let me know if you find anything to make this possible anyway.
Thanks.

Well, just because the system itself doesn't provide that functionality doesn't mean it's not possible. You just can't use your iMac as an amplifier without some help.

I'm sure an application like Apple's SoundTrack or GarageBand would let you do this.

Or, try one of these applications:

It works with Audio Recorder. I'll use it for recording the first track and then I'll use Audacity. I guess it should work. Thanks for helping.
I'd like to get Garageband but I need to get more RAM...
