my intel i mac won't start

I turn the machine on and the apple icon comes up and the thinking gear comes up but It won't go anywhere else I can't even get into safe mode.
Help!
 
Boot to your OS X installer DVD
Run Disk Utility from the menus (probably the Utilities menu), and select your hard drive, and click the Repair Disk button (different from Repair Disk Permissions)
If you get errors, try the same test again, so it runs clean.
