Hello. My iTunes library has apparently filled my entire iMac (according to the computer I have over 97 days' worth of music). I would like to know 1) how to properly save my iTunes library to an external hard drive and 2) how to use iTunes so that it uses the library on the external drive.

Just copy the iTunes folder in the Music folder under your user to the external drive. Then when opening iTunes, hold down the option key. It will then allow you to choose the library folder, choose the one on the external drive.

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Music folder

This will show you how to point iTunes to another location (after you copied the whole iTunes library folder in /YourHardDrive/Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes) to the new location. After you copy that whole iTunes folder to the new location, open iTunes. In itunes select the menu item "iTunes" and select "Preferences" Once itunes Preferences opens up select "Advanced" and change the Itunes locking for the library to the new iTunes copied folder you moved to the new location. After that is done quit the Preferences and then in iTunes menu items select the "file" women item. In the drop-down of File select library-Consolidate. It will take a minute but this way itunes will always look in that new location and then you can delete the old Music tune folder once iTunes starts using the new location folder.

So with the liked article you should have a good idea on how to moe your library, the right way.

Good Luck.
