My new Mac hangs with the CD audio player.

Still new to the Mac, this time an unexpected "hang" - I did it twice and get it both times. Here's the sequence:
1) I load an audio CD in
2) I open the audio CD folder by clicking on the icon
3) I double click on a selection in the list

At this point, I cannot function with the computer. The little play window opens, but nothing plays. There is no sound at all. The little multi-colored ball (is that a prompt?) spins roun d and round, but I cannot get it to play, nor can I stop it. I cannot eject the disk. I cannot get the mouse to do anything. I cannot reboot the computer. The first time it happened I rebooted the computer by holding the power button in for a few seconds until the computer shut down completely. The second time it happened, I left the room and returned about an hour later, it had finally shut itself down (the selection) and allowed me to eject the disk. I thought the Mac didn't do things like this.

By the way, the audio CD works fine if I use iTunes first and allow the audio selections to be imported into iTunes. I just wondered why this hang up the first way.
