my old fonts don't work :(

hey!

i'm a fairly new dude on the OS X wave... loving its stability and ability to juggle many large RAM-busting applications at once!

however... i have a pretty hefty number of fonts in my collection... and i can't seem to get any of them to work on OS X!! bummer...

when i try to put the fonts into the 'fonts' folder in the system folder [seemed logical to me] they were rejected --- apparently the fonts folder doesn't get touched. then i found another fonts folder in my own account bit so i put them in there, happy in the knowledge that i could still suss out a mac at 40 paces --- only to discover that my fonts still don't seem to come up in apps such as photoshop.

any ideas? am i missing something obvious? its actually been very frustrating as photoshop is basically my trade so i think i've tried all the obvious [and not so obvious] things!

cheers, d*

The "System Folder" is only used by Classic (OS 9). OS X uses the "System" and "Library" folders. You should never need to go into the "System" folder for anything.
The font folders for OS X are:
/Library/Fonts - Fonts visible to all users
~UserHomeFolder/Library/Fonts - Fonts visible only to that user.

All the fonts that worked in Mac OS 9 should work in X.

hey

i know the system folder is for OS9... i put it in the folder called system, if you will... but the folder doesn't want any new fonts in it by the looks of it... just wont accept anything! anyway, i did put them in the fonts folder in my user library and they still wont work... i don't know if it matters, but my old OS was 8.6, not 9... have fonts changed since 8..6 or something?

any help greatly appreciated :)

fonts are avaiable from 4 main places on my system, and I would think on any Mac OS X system that also has a Classic System Folder. Opening Text Edit, (which of course has nothing to do with Classic) I can view and use fonts from System Folder/Fonts; System/Library/Fonts; Library Fonts; and <user>/Library/Fonts. The only fonts I can't get to work are PostScript fonts (I don't have use for these anyway) and the older non-standard font types that can still be used if I boot to OS 9. I think there are other locations that OS X will use fonts.

Have you tried putting the fonts in the System Folder/Fonts ? Or the Library/Fonts ?

You should also try deleting the fontTablesAnnex file (System/Library/Caches/) and restarting the system, file will automatically rebuild.
