I recently purchased a NEC 3550A DVD burner in a Cypress USB enclosure. As you can see below, it appears to not be supported on my Mac (G4, 10.3.9). Did a make a mistake in purchasing it?

Cypress AT2LP RC7:

Manufacturer: _NEC
Model: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Not Supported
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: Yes
Vendor ID: 1204
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Product ID: 26672 ($6830)
Bus Power (mA): 500
Serial Number: DEF10964D0A4

Any suggestions?

If you made a mistake, it was choosing USB, instead of FireWire. Your burner is connected through USB, and your system is USB 1.1, so you can expect VERY slow performance, and most DVD burns will likely fail.
You'll notice the entry 'Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec'
With USB 2.0, that would increase to 480 Mb/sec
If you have a G4 PowerMac (tower), then you can purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card, and get much better use of the burner.

Thanks for the link to patchburn; Worked as advertized and the burner is up and running though from what I understand in reading the web site, the version for OS 10.3.x does not allow for re-writing. Not a big deal at this point.

As to the USB 1.1 vs. 2.0; You are right that it works slowly but that is not much of an issue at the moment. If it becomes one, I'll keep your suggestion in mind.

Thanks for the help
