Need an OSX System backup disk

I bought a used Power Mac G-5 OSX 10.4.11 (machine model Power Mac 9.1) My situation is, that it came without the back up disk. I need them in case of a crash, etc., but for now I need to get the classic OS9 installed onto my computer. Is there a way I can buy another set of system back up CDs?

Your best bet would be to find a retail version of Tiger (OS 10.4) on eBay or purchase a retail version of Leopard (OS 10.5) from Apple or any other authorized re-sellers.

That wouldn't solve his problem of restoring Classic _at all_, though. He, in this case, *needs* the disks that came with that computer (or a model of the same series). Tiger disks will only just install that: Tiger.

The best way to obtain those disks is to contact the seller of the computer and politely ask that the sale be completed with the inclusion of the original software restore disks.

The software restore disks should go along with the computer from owner to owner, as they do the previous owner absolutely no good without the computer. Not to mention that the license for the software on the disks is tied to the computer model that they came with.

If the seller drags their heels or avoids giving you the disks, simply explain that purchasing a computer without the factory restore disks is like purchasing a car without the keys: completely unacceptable (and useless!).

To talk about cars and carkeys when trying to talk about computers and restore-disks is like using a bad metaphor instead of a good one. :p (c)1999 by fryke

Whether it's a bad metaphor or a good one is irrelevant; it's applicable and accurate.

I'll fix the metaphor then:

Yay! :) ... Why I even mentioned it: You _can_ start the computer and use it without the restore-disk, you _can't_ use the car (without hacking).

If you buy a now inexpensive firewire external disk. Then get something like Carbon copy cloner will clone the OS 9 System folder. OS X (on you PPC Mac and OS X) will boot from an external firewire disk that was cloned.

[rant]You should never bitch about loosing data if you NEVER back up.[end rant]

That's why it's a metaphor instead of a simile... I didn't say "a computer is a car," I said, "a computer is like a car."

Whoops... I got my definitions switched around. I should have said, "That's why it's a simile instead of a metaphor," since a metaphor uses "is a" and a simile uses "is like a".

So yeah, it's not a metaphor at all. It's a simile, and I've been accused of metaphorically referring to something when it wasn't a metaphor at all! Man the harpoons!
