when i start up my ibook i see a black screen with a command prompt to "login:"
above this is "Darwin/BSD"...

how do i boot my system and get everything back to normal?

it is asking me to login without the desktop environment, like dos.
on a pc you would type "win" enter and windows would launch
HOW DO I GET THE DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT TO LOAD?
PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP!!

insert your install DVD, power up while holding the "C" key down.
Right after you get passed the Language selection screen, in the top menu select Disk Utility.
Run Repair disk on your system hard disk and report the results back here.

i am still having the same problem!
disk utility found a minor problem and resolved it.
i need to launch aqua, what command boots aqua from the text console?

When you say they don't work, do you mean that you booted to open firmware and tried them and they really did nothing, or that you didn't notice Giaguara said "Can you boot to open firmware" to try them, and you tried them in the console and got "reset-nvram: command not found"?

Saying that "they don't work" without any detail doesn't help us help you. What about it didn't work? Did you issue the commands successfully but still couldn't boot to aqua? Were you unable to boot to OF at all? Or was it one of the hundred other ways it could have not worked?

To boot to open firmware you hold down Command-Option-O-F while booting, and you'll get a screen like the console but with tiny font. Try those commands there. Open firmware is vaguely similar to CMOS settings on PCs.
