need HOWTO on Partitioning without losing Data

I'm just trying to make 2 partitions, one on my iMac, and one on my external usb drive. I don't want to lose any information though.

I've read an article, there is a way to do it in diskutility but its all command line stuff, I don't feel comfortable with doing that in case I mess something up.

another method I guess is iPartition 3 for leopard. Don't know if this is any good though.

Is there any free way to just create these partitions maybe with a GUI ?

I guess you mean that you want to _add_ a partition to the existing partitions on both your internal, and an external USB drive. Do I have that right?

Of course, that's one of the enhancements to the Disk Utility in Leopard 10.5
You can add a partition, as long as you don't try to make a partition that will lap over onto the existing files that you have.

Just open Disk Utility, select your drive (not its partition) and go to the Partition tab. Click the plus (+) at the bottom of the partition list. Slide the partition slider to change the space for that new partition.
Just don't forget to leave enough space for your existing partition. Your files, plus about 10GB should be OK. The rest of the drive could be used for that partition....
This will work, but like any partition scheme, there will be some risk to your data - make sure your files/documents are backed up safely before you try this.

yes thats actually perfect! thanks! I have one more question though..

when doing a image restore from a dmg to one of my drives, i get this error:

2007-12-02 23:04:40 -0500: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore


what does it mean? and how do I go about scanning the image so its ok to restore? thanks

OK nevermind, I fixed it. I had to mount the dmg first! (lol!)

In Apple Disk Utility, go to the Images menu and select "Scan Image For Restore..."

Then, proceed with restoring the image file.
