Need recommendation on CD burner

Hi,

My Iomega ZipCD 650 has about given up the ghost and won't record music anymore. I've tried under OS 10.2.8 using iTunes and OS 9.2.2 using Toast, but to no avail. It still records data OK.

Any suggestions as to good moderately priced (under $100) burner. And also ones to stay away from. I've been looking at the LaCie 52x32x52 USB Ext CDRW at $ 88.00 from Amazon but it only has a 2mb buffer. Anyone have any luck with this one?

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

The Lacie 52x32x52 is a great burner. I have one at work, and it's quick and reliable, and works with iTunes, Backup, iPhoto, etc. The only difference is that the one I have at work is the FireWire version -- your G4/500 machine only has USB 1.1 ports (unless you've added a USB 2.0 card) and the fastest you'll be able to burn with that Lacie USB drive is 4x, and MAYBE 8x over USB 1.1. I would highly recommend the FireWire version.

Another thing to consider is replacing your internal drive. I recently purchased an aftermarker Pioneer "SuperDrive" 106 from here:

It's a snap to install, burns DVD-Rs at 4x and CD-Rs at 16x. Not exactly 52x, but I never thought I'd have a use for a SuperDrive and now I don't know how I ever lived without one. Being able to back up 4.6GB of data onto one disk is... just amazing if you have as much stuff as I do.

I just put a Lite-On IT 52x32x52x CDRW internal in the G4/450 at work - it's awesome. Plus, it's fully supported and bootable.

As an added bonus, it's only $34.99 @livewarehouse:

I had to replace the FireWire LaCie 8x4x32x burner I had at work - it started working intermittently. Sometimes it wouldn't even see a CD - blank, burned or commercial - as being in the drive. It was only 2 years old.

Hi,

Thanks to all who responded to this thread. I ended up buying the Pioneer DVR-107 from Accupc for $ 138.50 including shipping. Ordered it on Thursday and received it on Monday via Fedex. Great service! It has since come down to $123.00! Best price I've seen on this item anywhere. A patch will be needed to use this burner. I installed the new burner applied the patch and it works like a charm!

Purchased at: http://www.accupc.com/search_result_k.jsp?keyword=dvr-107&x=0&y=0

Patch available at: http://www.macwelt.de/magazin/0310/PatchBurn1.1en.sit

Best regards to all.
