This is a simple thing to do accidentally, and if you don't realize how it happened, it's quite a challenge to fix.
Actually, the fix is very simple: Press and hold Control-Option-Command, and then the number 8. Your screen will reverse every time those same keys are pressed.
If you want to know the purpose, open your System Preferences, then Universal Access.
You'll see the setting under Display: Switch to White on Black
While you are there, be sure that Enhance Contrast is all the way to Normal.
Those settings are for vision-challenged folks. The reverse screen can be seen more easily with certain kinds of vision impairment.
