Neptune external firewire 400 won mount

G4 with OX 10.5.8, external firewire 400 drive won't mount, neither will the external CDR. They won't mount on the PCI card firewire ports, the mac ports on the back or the internal firewire port. Took the SATA drive out and connected that up through the USB port and drive works ok, connected the Cdr up to the usb ports and it works. Wonder if 10.5.8 doesn't have some bugs. Tried removing pram battery and resetting, reboot with no periperals installed and then hot plugged the firewire ports, tried different cables. This external drive is a backup drive, already had a drive failure with hundreds of photos on it that i can't recover.
