new cinema displays?

What could be the reason for the release of new Cinemadisplay dispays?
What is lacking from the models that are on now?
 
When were these new displays supposedly announced? I'm pretty sure the current ones have been out for a few months at least. No sign of any changes on the Apple site, either.
 
I have read some reports that the 23, and maybe the 30-inch models have substantially brighter display panels recently, but there is no announcement of any kind about that, probably just an internal change and nothing more.

There was a model change in November 2005 with these displays, but no specification changes at that time. The Displays had to be sold as lead-free to comply with some European directive. That's the latest change of any kind with Apple's displays.
 
Well, they could always try to make them thinner. That seems to be the thing nowadays, at least with the iMacs.
 
The specs of the 30" Cinema Display received an increase recently on Apple's site. This doesn't reflect an actual upgrade, but Apple's response to Dell's posting of higher specs for their 30" monitor.

They can do this because both monitors use the exact same panel made by LG. The difference is that the higher specs represent use in ideal lighting situations.

Dell just used the higher specs offered by LG, while Apple posted lower, and slightly more realistic (some would say) specs.
