New Mac Mini woe

Last night my wife was working at my Mac Mini (purchased a month ago - the computer that is, not the wife). When she logged out, the cursor froze on the screen. She didn't tell me this had happened.

Two hours later, I found the screen frozen and my Mac Mini was making a whining noise. I had no choice but to reboot using the on/off button on the back of the machine.

I suspect the cause of the freeze is a third party software download (in this case Skype) which I have uninstalled.

All should be well. However the Mac Mini seems louder than before.

Could the hardware have been damaged by the freeze?
