new mail sound not working - HELP!

I am running two older model iMac G3s - a 400 MHz and a 350 Mhz. They both have 384 mb RAM and are running Mac OS X v10.3.9 with Mail v1.3.11 (v622/624).

Up until recently, they both worked fine. Mine still does. For some reason, on my girlfriends computer, the 350, whenever a new email comes in the "New Mail Sound" doesn't play correctly. I have it set to play a WAV file, just as it always has, but when it tries to play it, the only thing we hear sounds like a needle being drug across a record for a split second instead of the voice announcement it should play.

I tried to remove the sound files from Mails preferences using Add/Remove, but they were not listed there although they were still listed in the list of sound choices. I removed them manually from the Library/Sounds folder and had Mail re-add the WAV file using the Add/Remove option in Mail. No good. I pull Add/Remove back up and the file isn't listed there. It's still in the choices and it is still in the Library/Sound folder.

I forget to mention that when I select the WAV from the list of choices, the audio plays just fine.

I removed Mails Preferences and let it rebuild that. Still get the same thing. I am at a total loss. Hopefully, someone here will be able to help. She really misses Bugs Bunny telling her when she gets new mail :)

Well the file is in Mail's Preferences and in there select the General tab. This will show 'New Mail Sound' will a drop down. The default sound is VERY SOFT. You can use the drop down to select a new sound if you want.

Thank you, but that's not quite my problem. I already changed the default sound. The problem is that the sound I changed it to, while it plays just fine in iTunes as well as when Mail previews it upon selection, it only plays as a scratch - like when a corrupt sound file is played.

Thank you, though....

Well, I'm able to hear Homer Simpson announce that I have new mail and when I go to Add/Remove the Homer file doesn't show BUT it does play as it's supposed to. FTR, the filetype is .aif.

I can however bring back up the Add/Remove and click on Add, then navigate to my ~/Library/Sounds/Homer.aif and successfully add the file. I have absolutely no idea how this changes anything in my instance as I could already and had already chosen Homer.aif as the New Mail Sound ....

What I'm trying to get across is don't put too much on the fact that the Bugs Bunny file shows in the list of sounds to play for New Mail but doesn't show in the Add/Remove box.

Try converting the file to .aif using iTunes and place it back into ~/Library/Sounds and test it out ...
