New Pioneer dvd drive doesn't work properly.

I have a PowerPc Mac G5 running Leopard 10.5.8 and I have been upgrading some parts. I installed the Pioneer DVR-A18L, which is the European version of the DVR-118L that is being sold as Mac compatible everywhere. When checking on System Profiler it is recognized as the Pioneer DVR-118L and the following:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-118L
Firmware Revision: 102
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No

So, at the moment the drive reads CD's but it doesn't get to play them; on iTunes it reads the tracks and gets the titles and stays hanging and doesn't get to play them at all. When inserting DVD's it spins for a while until it says that a blank DVD/Media have been inserted.
Anyone knows why this is happening? Do I need to flash it or fix something? I thought it would work straight away as the DVR-118L.

I am having a similar problem, though mine started after 1 month of use.
I installed the Pioneer DVR 118L, and everything worked fine. After I added an external USB harddrive, suddenly, the DVR will not burn DVDs. I reads that they are DVDs, it also burns CDs fine, but "no-joy" on DVD burning. Here is my system profiler specs:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-118L:

Firmware Revision: 1.01

Profile Path: /Library/DiscRecording/DeviceProfiles/PatchBurn-pioneerdvdrwdvr118l.drprofile
Cache: 0 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes

Any ideas?

Any reason you're using PatchBurn?

I believe that drive is natively supported by OS X in the most recent versions -- try removing the PatchBurn profile/driver for that drive and see if it behaves better.

Removed the patchburn by reinstalling Tiger. Now the system profiler reads as follows:

Firmware Revision: 1.01
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2000 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: No

Still no DVD burn though. It is really frustrating! I hear it spinning. It reads DVDs and CDs, and burns CDs fine.
