No result from hard drive icon click

Booted Powerbook G4 this am, no prob. Booted this afternoon, boots fine, asks for login, hard disk icon appears along with dock. But clicking on hard drive icon does nothing. Can access files/folders via Finder...but clicking through opens nothing, ending with a "preview" of the folder icon.

Nearly new machine, no software added recently, no jostling.

Ideas?
