NOOB Question about FTP

Hello, I am a recent convert and wanted to get some feedback about FTP. This is not a "Which one is best?" Thread but rather I have no idea how to use the FTP Client (Transit) to locate files. I once tried mIRC when using windows in a previous life but was unsuccessful at getting much off of it. My question is what would be a simple way to search for files using an FTP client. I have friends who can upload to sites in order for me to download off but other than that I have no idea where to go in order to see if there are any useful software programs floating around that would be of use to me. Any help is appreciated.

In order to download a file via FTP, you must know a few things before you begin:

1) The address of the FTP site (eg, IP address or server name like "ftp://someftpsite.com")
2) The credentials (username/password) needed to log in to that site
3) The exact path and filename you wish to download

Without that information, you're stuck -- you can see how eliminating even one of those 3 things will get you nowhere (don't know the server address = can't get to the server... don't know credentials = can't log in... don't know file to download = don't know file to download). If your friend is trying to transfer a file to you via some FTP server, then he/she should know all three of the above and should be able to give that information to you so you can log in and download the file(s).

Are you trying to use FTP as a sort-of peer-to-peer thing? Or is your friend just trying to let you download a file from somewhere?

I guess I was hoping to use it as sort of a perr-to-peer thing,(downloading software, music etc.) but I may not have the best handle on exactly what its capable of. Is there a decent Peer-to-Peer client for Mac? I see Limewire is a popular download at some sites but I am very leary of it. I imagine however it is a bit more stable running on OS X than windows. I used it a few years back strictly for music but my main focus would probably be applications. Any Suggestions?

I'd love to help you here, but board rules prevent discussion of p2p applications, since downloading copyrighted applications and copyrighted music is illegal in most areas.

If you're looking for a good place to discuss Macintosh p2p and illegal software trading, unfortunately, this is not the place.
